WEST END YMCA CHILDREN’S ROOF GARDEN
DESIGNED GARDENS
The design and construction for this roof top garden is the result of a collaborative community engagement process led by VTLA and the YMCA. To comply with childcare site regulations and provide use flexibility, cedar planters are suspended on empty wall space, are braced to roof support columns and placed on wheeled platforms. Other elements include a rain collection wall, herb scented bench, chalkboard and carnival mirrors. Overhead ‘flying’ gardens in steel and cable mesh support perennial vines to create shade on this exposed rooftop site.
The design and all elements went through extensive review and were approved for use under the Ontario Day Nurseries Act.
