FENCEROW FARMSTEAD
DESIGNED GARDENS / MASTER PLAN DESIGN
Inspired by the cultural heritage and dynamic beauty of the living linear landscapes that mark the colonial borders of southern Ontario farmland, VTLA used the fencerow to redefine the boundary for our client’s property that had been recently severed from working farmland located in Prince Edward County.
Balancing contemporary lines with rural vernacular, a 165-meter allee of Acer saccharum / Sugar Maple is planted along a new cedar split rail fence to provide architectural rhythm. The fencerow design, which includes a mixture of other deciduous hardwoods and native Ontario shrubs, creates needed privacy, safety from the adjacent working agricultural fields, seasonal interest, as a windbreak and animal/bird habitat, and the opportunity for future maple syrup making. Strategic cuts through the property line fencerow accentuate views toward the sunset and the fields beyond.
